Meeting the Jamaican Government Delegation September 2026
King Charles III is head of State of Jamaica. Olivia Grange Culture Minister submitted a Petition to him on behalf of her Government. It was filed under section 4 of the Judicial Committee Act of 1833 and poses three questions for the King to consider: whether the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica was legal under English law; whether it violated international law; and whether the UK has a legal obligation to provide compensation for the harms caused by slavery.
In a historic decision this has now been passed on to the Privy Council for Judicial Review.
They were delighted to receive a copy of my grandfather - W M Macmillan's book of 1936 ' Warning from the West Indies' - a damning indictment of imperial administration and economic neglect
